How it works

How a jetting call goes

Jetting is a planned job, even when the call is urgent.

  1. You call

Any hour. Describe the line and its clog history.

  2. You share the history

How often it clogs, what a cable did, whether roots or grease are suspected, and whether there is a cleanout.

  3. Same-day help

Same-day service is available, and a line that has stopped is handled first.

  4. The line is jetted and checked

The plumber runs the jet, flushes the debris out and confirms the line flows. A camera view can follow.

Pricing

What decides the price of hydro jetting

Jetting is priced by the job, not by a set menu. These are the things that move the price.

Length and size of the line

A short fixture branch is quicker than a long run to the street. Larger pipe takes more time.

How heavy the buildup is

A light film takes less passes than thick grease or scale, or a dense mass of roots.

Access to the line

A cleanout at the right spot gets the jet in quickly. Without one, the plumber may have to go in through a fixture.

A camera check

Looking before and after the jet adds a step, and it shows whether the pipe is sound.

The condition of the pipe

If the camera shows damage, the job may turn into a repair, and a repair has its own scope of work.

How it works

What hydro jetting is, and how it differs from a cable

Water does the cutting

A hydro jetter is a pump that sends water at very high pressure through a hose with a nozzle on the end. The nozzle has jets pointing backward, which pull the hose forward through the pipe, and others that spray sideways to strip the pipe wall. Water, with the debris it has loosened, flows back toward the access point and out.

A cable works differently. It pushes through the blockage and either breaks it up or hooks it. A cable leaves a hole in the clog, but it does not clean the pipe wall. A jet does both, so the line comes back close to its original bore. That difference is why jetting is the better answer to clogs that return.

Two ways to clear a line

The nozzle matters as much as the pressure

Different nozzles do different jobs. A forward-facing nozzle punches through a stopped line. A rotating one throws jets in a circle to scour the walls. A flat or penetrating head is for a root mass or hard scale. The plumber picks the nozzle for what the line holds, and often changes it during the job, starting with a gentle pass and ending with a harder one.

Flow and pressure are both controlled. Too little and the jet only wets the pipe. Too much, applied to a thin or damaged pipe, can do harm, which is why the choice is made after a look at the pipe and not before.

Nozzle stages
  1. Open a path

A forward jet cuts through a full stop so water can move again.

  2. Scour the wall

A rotating head sweeps the inside of the pipe in a circle.

  3. Cut the roots

A root-cutting head works through the mass without leaving the pipe unprotected.

  4. Flush it out

Debris travels back toward the access point with the water.

What it removes

The buildup jetting is made for

Not every clog is a plug. Many lines are lined with a layer of something that grew slowly and narrowed the pipe over time. Jetting is aimed at those layers. The table lists what each one is, why it forms and how jetting deals with it.

BuildupHow it formsWhat jetting doesHonest limit
Cooking greaseFat cools and sticks to the wall, then catches foodHot or high-pressure water strips the filmA new film forms again if grease keeps going down the drain
Soap scum and hairSoap hardens around hair along the wallBreaks the mass and washes it outHair keeps arriving without a strainer
Mineral scaleHard water leaves crust that thickens over timeScours loose scale off the wallHeavy, old scale may need repeated passes
Silt and sandSettles in flat or low-flow stretchesPushes the sediment to the access pointA sagging section will hold silt again
Tree rootsRoots grow in at joints and mass inside the pipeA cutting head clears the massRoots return unless the gap is repaired
Jetting cleans the pipe. It does not fix a pipe that is damaged.

Roots deserve a note. A jet can clear a root mass quickly, but the root entered through a gap, and the gap is still there. Our sewer line repair page covers fixing the pipe itself. For scale, the guide to hard water in Southern California homes explains why minerals build up, and a water softener reduces how much arrives in the first place.

Is it right for your line?

When hydro jetting in Lake Elsinore fits and when it does not

Pressure is a tool, not a cure

Jetting suits a sound pipe with buildup in it. It is a poor fit for a pipe that is already cracked, separated or collapsed, because high-pressure water can widen a break, wash soil into the pipe or push water out into the ground around it. That is the reason good hydro jetting in Lake Elsinore starts with a look at the line, and the reason a simple clog does not call for a jet at all.

Old or fragile materials call for extra caution. A plumber who sees a thin-walled or deteriorated pipe on camera may switch to a gentler method, or recommend repair first. If you are unsure about the condition of your line, start with a sewer camera inspection. If you only have a slow fixture, read about drain cleaning instead.

What to expect on the day

Getting ready for a jetting visit

Jetting is a wet job. Water and debris come back toward the access point, so the plumber sets up where the mess can be controlled, often at an outdoor cleanout. If your house has one, clear the area around it and keep children and pets away. If there is no cleanout, the plumber may need to work through a toilet connection or a roof vent, which is a longer setup.

Tell the plumber about any plumbing work done on the line in the past, such as a patch or a liner. A lined pipe, in particular, needs a gentler approach. Ask about how the plumber will protect the floor and the yard, and whether a camera will follow the jet.

Before the jetting
  • Find the cleanoutA capped pipe in the yard or against the house wall. Leave the cap for the plumber.
  • Clear the work areaMove planters, pots and furniture away from the access point.
  • Keep pets and children awayThe hose is under pressure and wastewater comes back out.
  • Hold back on water useLimit running taps and flushing until the plumber says it is fine.
  • Note past workPatches, liners or earlier cable clearings help the plumber choose a nozzle.
A little preparation shortens the visit.

After the jet

When the jetting is done, the plumber runs water through the line to confirm it flows, and a camera pass shows whether the walls are clean and whether anything is damaged. A sound, clean line should drain freely. If the camera shows a crack, a joint that has slipped or a section that sags, that is a repair job, and the plumber can explain the options.

Clean pipe stays clean for as long as the habits that made it dirty stay away. Grease, wipes and heavy hair loads are the usual culprits. See how to unclog a drain for the home side of keeping lines clear.

Afterwards
  1. Run water

The plumber checks that the line drains freely.

  2. Camera pass

A video check shows how clean the walls are.

  3. Talk through findings

Any damage seen is explained, with the options.

  4. Change one habit

Remove the cause of the buildup so it does not return.

What follows the jet.
Backed up now

What to do while the line is stopped

Stop adding water to a full line

If a stopped line is backing up, jetting is a planned fix, but the first response is the same as for any backup. Stop using water. Move rugs and boxes away from the drain that is overflowing. Keep contact with the wastewater to a minimum, because it carries bacteria. Then call, and mention that the line has clogged before.

Right now
  1. Stop feeding the line

No flushing, laundry, dishwasher or showers.

  2. Protect the floor

Lift rugs and stored items from the affected area.

  3. Keep people and pets back

Wastewater should not be touched with bare hands.

  4. Call and mention the clog history

Open 24/7, and same-day service is available.

While you wait.

Never use a rented pressure washer in a drain.

A pressure washer is not built for a sewer line. It can damage the pipe, push waste back at you and spread contaminated spray. Leave jetting to the plumber. For urgent jobs, see emergency plumber.

Questions

Hydro jetting questions

What is hydro jetting?
Hydro jetting uses a pump, a hose and a nozzle to send water at high pressure through a pipe. The jets strip grease, scale, silt and roots from the pipe wall and wash the debris out. It cleans the whole pipe, not only the plug.
Is hydro jetting better than a drain snake?
For a line coated with grease, scale or roots, yes, because it cleans the wall. For a fresh plug at one fixture, no. A cable or a trap clean is enough for that. The right choice depends on the pipe and the clog. See drain cleaning.
Can hydro jetting damage my pipes?
On a sound pipe, jetting is a standard method. On a cracked, thin or collapsed pipe it can make things worse. That is why a camera look beforehand is common when the pipe’s condition is unknown.
Does hydro jetting remove tree roots?
It clears the mass inside the pipe, using a cutting nozzle. The roots enter through a gap, and the gap stays. Roots usually grow back until the pipe is repaired. See sewer line repair.
How often does a line need jetting?
There is no fixed schedule. A line that stays clear needs nothing. A line with heavy grease, roots or scale may need it again if the cause is not addressed. A camera shows how fast buildup returns.
Do I need a camera inspection with hydro jetting?
It is common. A camera before the jet shows whether the pipe is sound, and one afterward shows what the jet achieved. It is not always required, but it is the best way to avoid jetting a damaged pipe. See sewer camera inspection.
How much does hydro jetting in Lake Elsinore cost?
It depends on the length and size of the line, how heavy the buildup is, whether there is a cleanout, whether a camera check is included and what condition the pipe is in. Ask about pricing when you call and describe the line.
How does hydro jetting pricing differ from cable work?
Jetting uses heavier equipment and a longer setup, and it usually covers the length of a line, not a single clog. The price follows the job: line length, buildup, access and any camera work. Ask about pricing when you call.
Can I get same-day hydro jetting?
Same-day service is available. Timing depends on the problem and when you call. Say if the line has stopped completely, and mention anything a cable did before.
Are you available at night?
Yes. The line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A stopped line does not wait for office hours.
Is hydro jetting safe for older homes?
It depends on the pipe, not the age of the house. A sound pipe takes it. A fragile or deteriorated one may not. A camera look tells the plumber which it is, and a gentler method can be used when needed.
What should I do while waiting for the plumber?
Stop using water, keep children and pets away from any spill, avoid chemical cleaners and do not try a pressure washer. If wastewater is coming up, treat it as contaminated.
