Why call us

Why call about a softener

A softener is a plumbing install with a drain, a bypass and a power outlet. Here is why a single call works.

  • A live line, around the clockYou can call about a leaking softener at 3 a.m. or ask about a new one at noon. The line is open 24/7.
  • Same-day service availableFor a leaking or failed unit, same-day service is available.
  • The plumbing side is coveredBypass valve, supply lines and drain connection are standard plumbing, so no separate trade is needed.
  • One number for every jobSoftener today, a faucet or a heater next month. The number stays the same.
  • No form, no pressureDescribe your water and your house. Ask what makes sense.

How it works

How a softener job goes

Four steps from your first call to softer water.

  1. Call

Say you are interested in a softener, or that yours needs work.

  2. Describe your house

People in the household, bathrooms, where the water enters, and where a drain is nearby.

  3. Choose and schedule

Same-day service is available for repairs. Installs are scheduled around the unit chosen.

  4. Plumb in and program

The unit is connected with a bypass and drain, set to your hardness and tested.

Pricing

What decides softener pricing

A softener is a purchase and an install. These are the pieces that make one job different from the next.

Capacity of the unit

Larger units hold more resin and go longer between regenerations. They cost more.

Distance to the drain

The unit must discharge regeneration water to a legal drain. A long or awkward run adds work.

Where the water enters

A neat garage entry is quick. A tight or distant location is slower.

Electrical outlet

Most units need power for the control head. A missing outlet is another task.

Extras

A filter for chlorine, a bypass upgrade or a sediment prefilter all add parts.

The problem

What hard water does inside a house

Minerals that stay behind

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Nothing is wrong with drinking it, but when the water evaporates or is heated, the minerals come out of solution and stay behind. That is the white crust on a faucet, the spots on a glass and the crust on a heater element. The harder the water, the faster it builds.

The numbers for EVMWD supply come from the district’s 2018 water quality report. State Project water measured about 92 ppm, Colorado River water about 228, Canyon Lake about 250, Elsinore groundwater about 212 (with a wide range, from 9 to 620) and Temescal groundwater about 240. The U.S. Geological Survey calls anything above 180 ppm very hard.

Turning ppm into grains

Softeners are sized in grains, so divide ppm by 17.1 to get grains per gallon. That puts Canyon Lake near 15, Temescal groundwater near 14, Colorado River water near 13, Elsinore groundwater near 12 and State Project water near 5. Most of the supply is therefore hard to very hard.

Your own number depends on which sources feed your street, and the district blends them. EVMWD’s supply in fiscal year 2022 was about 65% imported water, 25% groundwater and 10% Canyon Lake. A hardness test kit from a hardware store, or the latest district report, gives a starting figure. The 2018 numbers are old, so check the current report before you size anything.

The fix

How water softener installation in Lake Elsinore removes hardness

Resin beads, salt and regeneration

Inside the tank are small resin beads loaded with sodium. As hard water passes over them, the calcium and magnesium stick to the beads and sodium goes into the water in their place. The water leaving the tank is soft.

Eventually the beads fill up. The control head then runs a regeneration cycle: brine from the salt tank washes the minerals off the beads and flushes them to the drain. That is why a softener needs salt, a drain and power. Most units regenerate on a schedule or by a meter that counts gallons used. A meter-based head saves salt and water because it only cycles when needed.

What happens in the tank
  1. Hard water in

    Calcium and magnesium arrive dissolved.

  2. Resin exchange

Beads trap the minerals and release sodium.

  3. Soft water out

The house gets soft water at every tap.

  4. Regeneration

Brine cleans the beads and drains the minerals.

Simplified flow through a salt-based softener.

Salt-based or salt-free

Only a salt-based softener removes hardness. A salt-free conditioner changes how minerals form crystals so they stick less. It does not make water soft, and its effect is milder. Some homeowners accept that tradeoff to avoid salt and brine drainage; others want a true soft-water result for heaters and fixtures.

Neither one filters chlorine or taste. For that, see water filtration. Because softened water has a little added sodium, anyone on a restricted diet should ask a doctor, and many homes plumb the kitchen cold tap or an outdoor spigot before the softener.

Sizing and install

Water softener installation in Lake Elsinore: choosing a size and a spot

How capacity is worked out

Capacity is stated in grains between regenerations. The usual approach multiplies the water your household uses in a day by your hardness. Your water bill shows how many gallons the household uses, so take an example of a home that uses 300 gallons a day. At 13 grains per gallon, that is about 3,900 grains of hardness a day, or roughly 27,000 in a week. A unit sized well above that regenerates less often.

Do not oversize without a reason. A unit much larger than needed sits idle between cycles and can leave stale water in the tank. The plumber sizes it from your numbers.

Information that sets the size
  • People in the homeMore people means more water and faster exhaustion of the beads.
  • HardnessUse your test or the current EVMWD report.
  • Peak flowLarge tubs or several showers at once need adequate flow.
  • Iron or rustRusty water needs a different treatment, tell us.
  • SpaceA softener and a salt tank need floor room and clearance.
What the sizing conversation covers.

Where it goes and what it hooks to

The softener goes on the main supply as it enters the house, ahead of the water heater, so every hot and cold line downstream is softened. It needs a bypass valve so you can isolate it for service, a drain for regeneration water, an air gap at that drain so wastewater cannot siphon back, and a grounded outlet for the control head. Garages, utility closets and side-yard enclosures are the usual spots.

Plan for the outdoor hose bibs and the kitchen cold tap. Plumbing them off the softened line wastes salt on the garden and adds sodium to drinking water. Ask the city building department whether any local rules govern where regeneration water can drain.

What changes once the water is soft

  1. Expect a different feel

Soft water feels slick on skin at first. That is the lack of mineral film.

  2. Use less soap

Soap and detergent lather with less. Cut back to avoid residue.

  3. Keep salt topped up

Check the brine tank monthly and keep it above the water line.

  4. Break up salt bridges

A crust over loose salt starves the brine. Tap the pile with a broom handle.

  5. Look at the heater

A heater that has been scaling will benefit. See water heater replacement if it is already failing.

  6. Mind the old scale

If old deposits break loose and clog aerators or screens, flow can dip. See low water pressure if flow drops.

The guide on hard water in Southern California homes explains how this ties into water heaters, and how long water heaters last shows how scale shortens that. Fixture trouble that scale causes is covered at faucet repair.

If your current softener is not working

Check these before you call

A softener can seem broken when it is not. The most common causes are simple: the brine tank has run out of salt, the salt has fused into a bridge, the bypass valve was left open after service, or the power was interrupted and the clock and cycle reset. Check each of those first.

If those are fine and the water is still hard, the resin may be spent, an injector may be clogged or the control head may have failed. Those are service calls. A softener that leaks at a hose or a valve should be bypassed and shut off while you wait.

Softener not working?
  • Salt levelAdd salt if the tank is low. Keep it above the water line.
  • Salt bridgeProbe the salt. Break any hard crust.
  • Bypass valveConfirm it is set to service, not bypass.
  • PowerConfirm the outlet and the clock are set.
  • Leak at a hoseShut off the supply to the unit. Call.
Basic checks before a service call.

Water on the floor?

Shut off the supply to the softener, or use the bypass to isolate it. If the water is spreading, shut off the main water valve. Then call.

Questions

Water softener installation in Lake Elsinore, CA: your questions

How hard is Lake Elsinore water?
In EVMWD’s 2018 report, sources ranged from about 92 ppm (State Project) to about 250 ppm (Canyon Lake). Dividing by 17.1 gives roughly 5 to 15 grains per gallon. Most of the supply is hard. Your street’s blend sets your figure.
Do I need a water softener?
It is not a health requirement. A softener is worth considering if you see scale on fixtures, spots on dishes, short heater life or dry-feeling skin. A hardness test shows how much you have.
Can you install a softener the same day?
Same-day service is available. Water softener installation in Lake Elsinore is usually scheduled around the unit you choose, while a leaking or failed softener can often be handled sooner. Describe what you need on the call.
Are you available at night or on weekends?
Yes. The line is open 24/7, so a softener that is leaking at night can be reported right away.
How much does water softener installation in Lake Elsinore cost?
It depends on the unit’s capacity, how far the drain is, where the water enters the house, and whether an outlet is nearby. Extras like a prefilter add to it. Ask about pricing when you call.
Why do two installs of the same softener cost differently?
The unit is the same, the site is not. A garage with the main line, a drain and an outlet within reach is fast. A long drain run, a missing outlet or a cramped closet takes longer.
Where does the softener go?
On the main line where water enters the house, before the water heater. It needs a bypass, a drain with an air gap and a grounded outlet. Garages and utility closets are common.
Will a softener remove chlorine or improve taste?
No. A softener removes hardness minerals only. For taste, chlorine and other contaminants, see water filtration.
Is softened water safe to drink?
Softened water has a small amount of added sodium. Most people are fine with it, but anyone on a sodium-restricted diet should ask a doctor. Many homes keep one kitchen tap unsoftened.
How often does a softener need salt?
It depends on size, hardness and use. Check the brine tank monthly and keep it above the water line. Hard water uses salt faster.
Will a softener help my water heater?
Yes. Scale on the tank floor or elements is a leading reason heaters wear out early. Soft water slows it. See water heater replacement if your heater is already failing.
What should I do if my softener is leaking?
Turn the bypass valve to isolate it or close the supply to the unit. Mop up and keep outlets dry. If water keeps spreading, shut off the main valve. Then call.
